OPEN DUTCH CHAMPIONSHIPS -  2015

In sequel to the Dutch Championships underwater photography, which could look forward to a growing interest, the visual committee of the Dutch underwater federation decided to organize the first Open Dutch Championships Underwater Video in 2014. The title of Dutch champion was not awarded yet. The competition was initiated by cinematographers Klaudie Bartelink and Edward Snijders.

In 2015 I decided to participate in the second edition of these Open Dutch Championships. This year the group of participants included among others the 2014 World Champion Katja Kieslich from Germany and 2014 Belgian Champion Jo de Smedt. This made this competition a contest with international stature!

During two competition days (Sunday May 17th and 31st) all competitors were allowed to shoot their footage to submit a short film with a duration of 3-5 minutes. The award ceremony was scheduled for September 18th 2015.

I teamed up with Yvonne Tijmes as my assistant and made a production called ‘Aphrodite’. It was an interpretation of the old Greek myth using the underwater creatures in the Eastern Scheldt and Grevelingen Lake as actors. The leading role was played by Lily-May Tijmes of whom I shot a lot of footage in a swimming pool which I mixed in the final production.

‘Aphrodite’ became the best Dutch video and ended just behind 2 Belgian and one German submitted film. I received a comprehensive report of the jury which forced me to pursue a higher quality in my productions for the future.

Out of curiosity I submitted ‘Aphrodite’ to the 42th Festival mondial de l'image sous-marine in Marseille (France) and to my surprise it was selected for screening. Only 60 films were selected out of 130 submissions. As a result of that I was invited to present "Aphrodite" at the 8th Festival Sprehodi pod morjem in Konjice (Slovenia). This festival was held from January 28-30st 2016.
