For the Open & Dutch Championships underwater videography I decided to leave the beaten tracks and tried an Cinematic Poem Short Film based upon a poem by John Masefield. I tried to portray the content of the poem – being the wish of a man to return to his origin – by using a scuba diver as the protagonist. In such a cinematic poem it’s the goal to reflect the rhythm of the poem into images and sound to create an ambiance.

I teamed up with René van der Laan for the second year in a row. We made several dives during the first competition days in May which resulted in no useful images at all because of the bad visibility. We tried again during the competition days in June and shot all footage needed to produce my film “Sea Fever”, a cinematographic poem.

The award ceremony was held September 29th at Podium Hoge Woerd in De Meern. In this theatrical environment an interesting evening was organized by the Dutch Underwater Sports Federation (NOB). It is a pity that this type of competition attracts a limited number of participants compared to the underwater photographers. Nevertheless I was glad to be awarded as Dutch Champion 2018 which gained me a ticket to the 3rd CMAS World Championships underwater videography scheduled for September 2019 at Tenerife.

For the first time additional prizes were awarded per category (script, creativity, montage, sound, technique and ambiance) besides the overall awards. My submission was awarded with a golden medal for ‘creativity’ and a bronze medal overall. Because the winner and runner-up were both Belgian I was the best Dutch participant my bronze medal gained me the title ‘Dutch Champion’ for the second time in a row.

My modified production made it afterwards to the official selection of the International underwater film festival in Belgrade Serbia December 14-16th 2018.

A specially edited short version of 02:30 minutes made it to the semi-finals of the World Shootout Competition 2018.
