Coproduction René van der Laan & Ronald Faber

Duration 1 x 52"

THE NEW COAST is a cinematographic portrait of the Eastern Scheldt, the largest and wettest National Park in The Netherlands. The film focuses on the changes in marine life in the Eastern Scheldt due to the construction of the Delta Works and the changing climate. It provides a picture of the processes that have taken place for years and are still going on; the arrival of new and exotic species through the shellfish trade and worldwide freight traffic by ships.

Major changes caused by the Delta Works are the lack of fresh water (nutrients) supply and reduced tides, as a result of which the original soft coast (mudflats and salt marshes plus sandbanks) are in danger of disappearing. The stones and boulders used in the construction of dikes form an artificial rocky coast from which many species benefit. Man-made objects offer animals new opportunities!
